A nice story from the north-west of England - Fallon Hignett has graduated as the UK’s first female Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle breakdown specialist. The 19-year-old from Liverpool works as a commercial vehicle technician at North-West Dealer Roanza Truck & Van. She joined the company after finishing school three years ago, earning a place on the Mercedes-Benz Apprenticeship Programme. Ford inspection drones keeping engine plant workers safely grounded

Ford employees are now using cameras mounted on drones to safely and efficiently inspect high-rise gantries, pipework and roof areas at the company’s Dagenham Engine Plant in the UK. Previously, the team carried out this important maintenance work by using automated extendable platforms and scaffolding to check 40-metre-long gantries that support the plant’s heavy machinery. Each inspection area would take a laborious 12 hours to complete. Now, with feet firmly on the ground and controlling drones equipped with GoPro cameras, maintenance staff can thoroughly inspect each area in just 12 minutes. The whole production facility can be covered in a...

Preventing NVH in vehicle braking systems

When deciding what car to buy, one of the highest priorities for potential customers is the cabin experience. Layout, comfort, technology and audio are all major influencers of customer perception, and are areas where automotive manufacturers can significantly differentiate their vehicles. This is why manufacturers spend vast sums on R&D to reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). NVH is a critical focus in the automotive industry that engineers address at the earliest stage of the design process, including NVH generated by the braking system. Specialist brake development During the development of a new model, vehicle manufacturers depend on their brake...

Road Safety Authority urges parents to ensure children are properly restrained in vehicles

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are appealing to parents, guardians and teachers to ensure road safety, in particular seatbelt safety, is on the back to school lesson plan for all school children. RSA research shows that 10 per cent of children traveling in the back seat of vehicles are not using proper restraints such as child car seats or seat belts. In 2017, the RSA conducted a nationwide study that observed seatbelt usage by 3,861 children both in the front and the rear seats of the vehicle. As part of the study, 93 per cent of...

The next technical era

I was tempted to call this feature new technology, it is however not all that new. What’s remarkable is the way in which the chosen technologies are fully integrated, even in vehicles of a more modest price range. The systems I have chosen are from the Audi range. In writing this feature the real challenge …

How to use a 4 gas analyser to spot potential problems

Although the humble 4 gas analyser is seen as an essential tool to carry out an MOT, I’m still surprised at how little information is retrieved by the technician after completing an emissions test, to aid with fault diagnosis. The problem is that the MOT only requires values of CO and HC plus a Lambda …
