Damage Diagnostics on Chain Drives

Elongated Chain

Cause:

  • Poor quality oil (e.g. water or dirt in oil, used oil)
  • Lack of lubrication (blocked oil nozzles)
  • Very high mileage
  • Corrosion
  • Blocked or not working tensioners
  • Poor running shafts (do not turn smoothly)

Note: The damage can be detected by a well-run chain tensioner or by a test measurement of the chain pitch.

Cause:

  • Misalignment between the sprockets
  • Poorly running shafts (radial stroke)
  • Chain not running in the guide
  • Rails mis-mounted
  • Damaged sprocket
