Dayco – PV Belt Diagnostics

PV belt: Broken Ribs

Causes:

  • Progression of cracks
  • Presence of foreign matter in the pulley groove
  • Incorrect assembly, ribs outside the pulley
  • misalignment, ribs untracking

Actions:

  • Check the correct installation of the belt, the absence of foreign matter in the pulley grooves and the correct operation of all the transmission components
  • Replace the damaged belt

PV belt: Loose resistant insert

Causes:

  • Excessive working tension
  • Irregularities in the pulleys that may cause abrasions or cuts to the belt
  • Faulty pulleys
  • Misaligned pulleys
  • Interference with a fixed component

Actions:

  • Make sure the transmission rigid components are in good condition and are correctly operating and aligned, and that the belt is correctly tensioned
  • Replace the damaged belt

PV belt: Deposit of external material in the belt grooves

Causes:

  • Deposit of external material in the belt grooves- Material detached from the ribs and deposited at the bottom of the grooves
  • Penetration of foreign material between the belt and the pulley groove causing vibrations or excessive noise

Actions:

  • Make sure the transmission rigid components do not show obvious signs of wear and that the belt tension is that prescribed by the manufacturer
  • Inspect the transmission components and make sure there is no material deposited in the pulley grooves: dirt or grit… that may compromise their correct operation
  • Replace the damaged belt

PV belt: Separation of the rib compound

Causes:

  • Use of unsuitable tools for the belt installation on the pulleys
  • Misalignment between the transmission components
  • Incorrect positioning of the belt on the pulleys

Actions:

  • During assembly, carefully check the belt positioning in the transmission and make sure the transmission rigid components are correctly secured and aligned
  • Replace the damaged belt

PV belt: Reduced rib section

Causes:

  • Low assembly tension
  • Excessively worn pulley grooves
  • Incorrect choice of belt for the application (excessive length)

Actions:

  • Make sure the belt is suitable for the application
  • Make sure the transmission rigid components do not show obvious signs of wear and that the belt tension is that prescribed by the manufacturer
  • Replace the damaged belt
