Getting the best diesel start in winter

With the cold weather fast approaching, it is important to be ready for winter by testing and replacing crucial parts including the glow plug. Specialists at DENSO therefore recommend motor factors to ensure that they have the best performing glow plugs in their product stock.

Glow plug failure is highest during colder weather when the temperature drops – in fact 80% of replacement glow plug demand occurs between September and March. There are several different types of glow plugs on the market and to ensure optimum ignition performance after replacement, it is vital to know which technologies perform particularly well in colder weather.

DENSO Aftermarket recommends two types of glow plugs for diesel cars: Ceramic and Instant Heating. These technologies provide an extremely reliable, rapid cold start, especially in winter.

Instant heating glow plugs in particular are likely to become more prevalent in the future, both as original equipment and in the aftermarket DENSO’s Instant Heating Glow Plugs even offer a unique advantage – with a heat-up time of around 2 seconds they achieve the fastest start of any glow plugs in the world.
Drawing on DENSO’s heritage as a world leader in OEM Diesel systems, its Glow Plug programme is one of the best in the industry for scope, coverage and performance. DENSO’s Glow Plugs programme offers fast heat-up times, outstanding reliability, and extended post-heat temperatures that help to significantly reduce vehicle exhaust emissions. In total the DENSO Glow Plugs programme includes 131 part numbers covering 1,055 OE references and 4,481 applications. A further 11 new Glow Plugs are also set to be added to the programme by December.

Consistently high levels of new diesel registrations throughout Europe signal a promising future for aftermarket growth. Emissions regulations for diesel engines will also continue to tighten in line with European legislation; and Euro 6 is impacting on the size of engines as manufacturers work towards meeting this target. By choosing the right replacement Glow Plug technologies, distributors and garages can ensure they serve this important market well, all year round.
