Drivetrain – Clutch Slips

Problem: Diaphragm fingers worn

Causes:

  • Excessive release bearing pre-load
  • No free play

Help:

  • Adjust pre-load
  • Renew clutch assembly
  • Adjust free play


Problem: Clutch facing worn out

Causes:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Allowing the clutch to slip for too long
  • Incorrect pressure plate

Help:

  • Renew clutch assembly


Problem: Clutch facing contaminated

Causes:

  • Oil seals leaking
  • Gearbox splines overgreased
  • Release bearing overlubricated

Help:

  • Renew oil seals
  • Renew clutch assembly


Problem: Uneven wear pattern on flywheel side of facing material

Causes:

  • Badly worn flywheel

Help:

  • Re-machine flywheel


Problem: Gearbox snout damaged

Causes:

  • No / incorrect lubricant
  • Damaged release bearing
  • Incorrect combination of bearing and snout

Help:

  • Renew gearbox snout
  • Use correct lubricant
  • Check parts for suitability


Problem: Clutch housing, levers or diaphragm spring broken

Causes:

  • Incorrect installation

Help:

  • Follow correct installation procedures


Problem: Overheating of pressure plate

Causes:

  • Oil on the facings (reduced coefficient of friction) – Faulty oil seals
  • Insufficient release bearing clearance
  • Damaged release system (cable or hydraulic)
  • Incorrect driving – Allowing the clutch to slip for too long
  • Incorrect parts

Help:

  • Oil contamination: Renew oil seal
  • Renew clutch assembly
