Opel Astra J – loss of coolant

The Opel Astra J can experience a loss of coolant near the exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR cooler). Here Hella Ireland offers some tips on fixing the problem.

If you suspect a leak in the cooling system, special attention should be paid to the EGR cooler. A crack in the housing can lead to a slow, gradual loss of coolant.

To remedy the situation, proceed as follows and use a repair kit comprising a housing, 2 gaskets, and 2 clips:
Allow the engine to cool down
Remove the EGR cooler housing
(collect coolant in a drip pan)
Remove EGR cooler from the housing
Clean sealing surfaces
Use repair kit (part no.: 55590953):
Fit EGR cooler in new housing
Install cooler housing with the new gaskets
Add coolant
Bleed cooling system
Inspect gaskets for tight fit
